On Wednesday October 2nd, 2024 Jackqueline “Jackie” Locks legendary educator, community titan, loving mother, wife, and sibling lost her courageous battle with cancer after 22 years at the age of 76. Jackie was born on July 29th, 1948 in Richfield Utah to Hebert Vern and Jeraldine Gulbransen.
From her early childhood you could tell she would dedicate her life to education. She excelled in academics and was an active member of the Four H Club and a champion barrel racer. Jackie’s family moved to Las Vegas when she was 16. She graduated from Rancho High School in 1966 at the top of her class. She went on to graduate from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and later received a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Right after completing her undergrad, she went on to become a 4th grade teacher at Pat Diskin Elementary School. Jackie taught 20 years in the Clark County School District. She was then assigned to the Curriculum Department for 2 years. She was appointed Principal at Elaine Wynn Elementary School where she served until her retirement in 2002.
After retirement she was appointed by Mrs. Wynn to serve as Executive Director of the After School All Stars. During her time with After School All Stars, the non-profit that provides after-school activities for underserved youth in Las Vegas, the organization expanded their offerings to reach more students in the district. In addition, the organization was featured on Good Morning America and recognized for their many extraordinary achievements. She then became Executive Director of Doctors Without Walls, which served the medical needs of low-income families. Her work with the Clark County School District, After School All Stars, and Doctors Without Walls impacted tens of thousands of children in Las Vegas and changed their lives for the better. She was known by everyone to be caring, generous, fun loving and full of life.
She touched every person she met with her kind spirit. Jackie was preceded in death by her father Herbert Vern, her mother Jeraldine, brother in-law Bucky, and niece Kelly. She is survived by her husband Edward, her two children Bransen (Kathleen), Brian (Kristi), her brother Douglas (Jan), sisters Trenna, Dawnie, and Verna, grandchildren Brighton, Jace, Brennan, Brooke, Gavin, and Brexley as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will be having a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that you make a donation in support of the Those Left Behind Foundation in memory of Jackie Locks.
